Click on the turret buttons to buy a turret, right click to cancel placement, and you can press P to pause.
The game autosaves every 2 minutes. Go into options from the main menu to delete your save.

What happens when you try to place them? You can only place them on the grey part, and it will be red if you can't place it, and green if you can.
